A stormcloud of proprietary network services threatens to move computing freedoms out of users' reach. We aim to make users aware of the ways in which this form of computing threatens their freedom, as well as the positive alternatives that preserve user freedoms.
While the term "cloud computing" is ambiguous enough to not necessarily imply a loss of computing freedom, a large subset of it (and the form most often implied by those who tout the term "cloud computing") does. This subset we identify as Stormcloud Computing and the disasters threatened by its use are very real. We encourage users to use free software locally and to become citizens of decentralized and distributed free network services when interacting with network applications is appropriate.
